OHD Museum is a private museum of Modern and Contemporary Indonesian Art founded and owned by the art collector Dr Oei Hong Djien. OHD is the acronym of Oei Hong Djien. Its collection amounts over 2000 art-works comprising paintings for the major part, drawings, prints, sculptures, installations, and new media art, assembled by OHD since the 1970s. It is the most complete, comprehensive and historical collection of modern and contemporary Indonesian art with innumerable high quality works art. OHD built the first museum building in 1997. Though it was officially not open for public, in fact, people from everywhere came to see the collection. The initiative to start a museum was due to the lack of art museums in the country at that time. The private collectors should not wait for the government to carry out this mission if they have the potential. In 2012 when inaugurating the 3rd building, the museum was officially declared open for public. Besides displaying its permanent collection in a rotating way OHD Museum holds regular curated thematic exhibitions from its own collection as well as exhibits artists’ shows. The museum often loan works to museums and other art institutions abroad and in the country for exhibition purposes. OHD Museum also published catalogues/books in conjunction with the exhibitions. If in the past the biggest part of the visitors were people from the art-world, now it shifts to non-art school students which is a good sign for Indonesia.
